All-American – Doug McDermott

JohnWoodenTrophySt. Louis, MO – Doug McDermott continues to collect post-season awards!  This week the Creighton Bluejay star was named a repeat recipient of All-American and Wooden award status.

McDermott averaged over 23 points per game and more than seven rebounds for the Missouri Valley regular season and post season tournament champions. The junior forward is the only repeat member of the Associated Press All-American team. He is the 51st player to be named two straight years by the AP.

McDermott follows four other MVC players with the All-American double.  They are Ed Macauley, Oscar Robertson,  Wes Unseld and Larry Bird.  Other first teamers in this year’s AP squad are Michigan’s Trey Burke, Georgetown’s Otto Porter (from Sikeston, Missouri), Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Kelly Olynyck of Gonzaga.

The Wooden All-American team names 10 players unrelated to first or second teams and McDermott repeated as an award recipient there too.  The Wooden awards also carry an additional academic emphasis.

McDermott is the only repeat winner on the Wooden team and is joined by Burke, Oladipo, Porter, Olynyk, Shane Larkin (Miami), Ben McLemore (Kansas & St. Louis native), Mason Plumlee (Duke), DeShaun Thomas (Ohio State) and Cody Zeller (Indiana).

McDermott hasn’t announced whether he will return for his senior year, or enter the NBA draft. If he stays in school he would have a chance to be just the twelfth AP triple winner and just the fifth Wooden three-peat.

The Bluejays will play in the Big East Conference next year.

I haven't heard, nor do I know, how does this apply to the typical 'foreign' basketball player that is most often over 19?

Obviously, this is a sentimental and not a ‘spreadsheet’ notion, but would hate to see @MVCsports change the #ArchMadness format from the traditional ‘family reunion’ feel by cutting teams from the experience. #FatherHarry

Congrats to @ISURedbirdGolf. T.J. Barger sets a school record. Pietro Pontiggia records the Redbirds' second-ever top 20 finish at a regional. The team finishes tent in the region which is tied for the program's best regional finish! #FatherHarry
