Matt Wilson Building Consensus

New OVC Leader

(St. Louis, MO) – Matt Wilson is big on building  consensus and the new Ohio Valley Conference commissioner is eager to get started. After years in the Atlantic Sun Conference and leading the Division 2’s Gulf Coast Conference, he finally has the job he has always wanted.

The Belmont graduate landed an OVC job during his third attempt at an OVC job. He knew several previous OVC commissioners and brings a successful career of building sponsorship connections and multi-media deals.

Wilson became the eighth-ever OVC Commissioner and says the process was an easy one. He is a middle-Tennessee native and has a great respect and optimism surrounding the OVC. He begins on May 18.

He has a proven history of building consensus and expanding media coverage and expanding conferences. Wilson believes the OVC’s current media exposure can be expanded. He believes the league has a compelling story to tell.

What’s Next for the OVC?

Wilson has several goals for his new position. He also believes his abilities in building consensus will serve him in accomplishing those goals. The former Belmont staffer has three basic marching orders. He wants to retain and expand membership, elevate the OVC brand and to grow revenue.

While league membership has shrunk to nine teams and may be stuck there for the coming season, Wilson will be aggressive in locating and recruiting a larger membership. He believes the OVC is an attractive destination for other programs.

The existing nine teams form the foundation for growth while larger markets like Nashville, Evansville and St. Louis also provide unique media exposure.

Wilson’s experience in consensus building will serve him well in all these endeavors. His firm belief is that he and the outstanding OVC staff will be able to mobilze donors, media partners and other institutions to see the value of association with the next generation of Ohio Valley Conference growth and expansion.

The highly competitive OVC has had seven different teams win or share a conference basketball championship in the last five seasons and sis different tournament winners in the last seven tournaments. It seems to be the perfect time for the entire league to move forward with the collaborative Matt Wilson.
