OVC/MVC Weekly Personal Honors

Near Sweep For Eastern Illinois

(St. Louis, MO) – Producing big numbers for winning teams usually produces personal honors. When a player is the national leader in a category, that usually produces personal honors. This week’s Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conference weekly award winners fit those categories.

Ohio Valley Conference

Mack Smith – eiupanthers.com

Eastern Illinois’ Mack Smith’s 59-game streak of making a three-pointer is the longest in the country. The 6’2 junior buried six triples in the Panthers’ most recent game and scored 24 points for the second straight game. EIU (6-4) won both of those games. This week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ is making .412 of his long distance efforts.

Smith doesn’t lead his team in scoring. This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘, George Dixon does. Dixon leads the Panthers with a 14.1 point average while Smith scores 13.7 per game. The Vincennes University transfer recorded his fourth double-double in the Panthers’ win over over Milwaukee. His 9.8 rebound per game average leads the OVC and his newcomer award is his second straight.

Belmont freshman Ben Sheppard had scored 28 points prior to the Bruins’ game with Carson Newman. The 6’6 guard earned this week’s ‘Freshman of the Week‘ honors by scoring 18 points in the victory. Belmont (7-3) has won three straight. Sheppard joins Adam Kunkel and Nick Muszynski as the third Bruin to earn a weekly honor.

Missouri Valley Conference

Northern Iowa won two games, including a defeat of nationally ranked Colorado. Guard A.J. Green averaged 22.5 points during UNI’s wins over the Buffalos and Grand Canyon. The 6’4 sophomore connected five times from deep in their upset win and is this week’s ‘Player of the Week‘. Green is sixth in the Valley in scoring (15.9 points per game) and third in three-pointers (2.6 per game).

DeAndre Williams has won the ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ four times in six weeks. His personal honors are piling up. The Evansville star produced a double-double in the Purple Aces’ only game. His 22-point, 12-rebound performance boosted is season scoring (17.2) and rebounding (8.0) averages to lofty places. Williams leads the Valley in field goal percentage (.716), is second in scoring and third in rebounding.
