OVC/MVC Weekly Awards

From D3 to OVC Player of the Week

(St. Louis, MO) – Surprise players often produce beyond what we expect of them. Last season Loyola Chicago’s Tate Hall, a Division II transfer landed on one of the league’s all-conference teams and this year a DIII transfer is making a name for himself.

Belmont’s Luke Smith is a box score “stat stuffer” and can do damage to opponents in numerous ways.

Ohio Valley Conference

Smith is this week’s OVC ‘Player of the Week‘ and ‘Newcomer of the Week‘. As Belmont swept Lipscomb and Tennessee State, Smith was scoring 42 points and accumulating eight steals. Smith now owns two ‘newcomer’ weekly awards. Smith is tied with Austin Peay’s Terry Taylor in the scoring race (19.5 ppg). He is tied with Eastern Kentucky’s Tre King for the steals leadership (2.8) and leads the league in made three-pointers (3.5 per game) and in minutes played (36.5 per game).

Morehead State’s Johni Broome earned his second ‘Freshman of the Week‘ honor. The 6’10 rookie averaged 12.3 points and eight rebounds during the Eagles’ three games. Broome is eighth in the OVC rebounding and blocked shots categories.

Missouri Valley Conference

Loyola is 3-0 and preseason all conference center Cameron Krutwig is off to a solid start. This week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ averaged 22 points and 6.5 rebounds during the Ramblers’ two victories. Krutwig is second to Southern Illinois’ Marcus Domask in the Valley scoring race (17.3 ppg) and leads the conference in field goal percentage (.667).

Green Bay transfer Shanquan “Tank” Hemphill scored 23 points against McKendree and added seven points, ten rebounds and a thunderous dunk in Drake’s win over Air Force. The 6’5 wing is this week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘. His .561 shooting percentage is second best to Krutwig in the MVC.

Here’s the dunk!
