Lindenwood & USI Are NCAA Eligible!

OVC Programs are March Madness Eligible

(St. Louis, MO) – Ohio Valley Conference basketball programs at Lindenwood and Southern Indiana are now eligible for the NCAA Tournament. Effective August 1, the athletic programs at two of the OVC’s newer athletic programs can officially compete for national titles.

In February, the NCAA announced a potential trimming of the transition period for programs moving into Division 1. Both Lindenwood applied to be reclassified for this coming season. On June 23, the NCAA confirmed the two programs as fully D1 athletic programs.

They gained access one year sooner than previously anticipated.

What They’re Saying

USI Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall told USIScreamingEagles.com that his staff worked tirelessly to make this a reality.

We are very excited that the transition process for Division I is now complete, and our student-athletes can earn the right to compete in NCAA Championships,” said Hall.It has been a heavy lift for everyone on campus, and I cannot thank our campus community enough for their efforts. Our alumni and the broader community have been extremely supportive during the process. Our student-athletes, coaches and staff are ready to embark on this new journey.

Lindenwood Director of Athletics Jason Coomer told Lindenwoodlions.com that becoming NCAA eligible brings a sense of pride to the entire campus and alumni.

We approached the NCAA reclassification process with great intention and care, understanding that achieving full Division I status would not only elevate the experience of our current student-athletes but also instill a deep sense of pride across our campus, among our alumni, supporters, and the entire St. Charles community,” said Coomer. “With full eligibility for NCAA postseason play, our focus now shifts to winning championships and raising banners that will define this new era.”

Reclassifying schools had to pass an academic review and meet other core qualifications.

Previous Successes

USI’s men’s basketball team has qualified for the past two OVC postseason tournaments. Stan Gouard’s team played in the 2023 College Basketball Insider tournament. The women’s team won the 2024 regular season title and has participated the last two WNIT events.

Lindenwood’s D1 success is similar. The Lions’ men’s team has appeared in two of three possible OVC tournaments. This past March, Kyle Gerdeman’s squad won the program’s first ever, conference tournament game. Amy Eagan’s women’s team earned the program’s first OVC Tournament bid and participated in last season’s WNIT.

Becoming NCAA eligible is a huge step and will help each university’s recruiting efforts.

Opening round of #ArchMadness is today. The only quarterfinal we know is @UIC_MBB v @RacersHoops tomorrow at 2:30. We look at their contrasting styles heading into the @MVCsports tournament. #FatherHarry

Don't look now, but @BustingBrackets tells us some of the hottest teams coming into #ArchMadness aren't the teams at the top of the bracket. @ValpoBasketball, @SIU_Basketball & @UNImbb shouldn't be overlooked. #FatherHarry

ICYMI: @BelmontMBB & @BradleyUMBB are two of the best at being committed to development and succeeding at the same time. #ArchMadness

Congrats to @RogerPowellJr, @CoachJonny_B & @NdotSmitty being named to the Ben Jobe Award finalist list. Well deserved!
