Final Weekly Honors
OVC and MVC Announcements
(St. Louis, MO) – While Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conference fans, teams and coaches prepare for their respective league tournaments, the OVC and MVC have announced their final weekly honors.
Some spectacular performances are noted in this week’s awards
Final Weekly Players of the Week
Morehead State’s George Marshall sparked the Eagles to a first-place tie in the league race. The 6’4 senior averaged 25 points and 6.5 rebounds as Morehead won its sixth and seventh straight games. While the Eagles were claiming a share of the conference crown, Marshall was earning the ‘Player of the Week’ award. Marshall finished as the OVC’s eighth leading scorer during league contests (15.1 ppg).
Evansville’s A.J. Casey had a Saturday to remember. The 6’9 senior scored a career-high 37 points and banked in a game-winning three-pointer. Casey’s 37-point performance was the highest for an MVC player this season and he is the Valley’s ‘Player of the Week’.
Newcomers are Shining
Jon Carroll was integral to Morehead’s championship run. The North Central Missouri College transfer averaged a double-double during Morehead’s two-game sweep. The OVC’s third leading rebounder averaged 17 points and eleven rebounds last week and earned the ‘Newcomer of the Week’ honors.
Illinois State’s Boden Skunberg propelled the Redbirds into the third seed at Arch Madness. The North Dakota State transfer averaged 14.5 points and six rebounds during the Redbirds’ sweep of Northern Iowa and Belmont. Skunberg’s finishing kick earns him the Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ award.
Wild Rookie Breakout
Little Rock freshman Joseph Thomas seized virtually his only opportunity to play this season and made the most of it. Thomas had played just 63 minutes all season prior to last week when he scored 30 points over the course of the Trojans’ two games. The ‘Freshman of the Week’ exploded for 19 points in season’s final game to project LR into the OVC Tournament.
Valparaiso’s J.T. Pettigrew keeps doing amazing things. The 6’9 rookie hit the game-winning shot to defeat Drake and averaged 16 points and 6.5 rebounds during the Beacons’ two games. Pettigrew’s ‘Freshman of the Week’ award is his fourth, tying Murray State’s Roman Domon for the most weekly honors. During league contests, he is second (13.0) to Domon (15.3) in scoring and leads the rookies in rebounding average (7.1).
The season awards for each league will be announced later this week.
