Down Goes St. Bonaventure!

Jake & the Giant Killers Do it Again

(St. Louis, MO) – Northern Iowa makes a habit of taking down power conference teams and those that are nationally ranked and they did it again Saturday. UNI knocked off Sixteenth ranked St. Bonaventure by a score of 90-80.

In the immortal words of UNI play-by-play announcer ‘Down Goes St. Bonaventure, Down goes St. Bonaventure’. OK, that doesn’t have the same ring as ‘down goes Kansas’ in 2010, but it was a great win for UNI and for the Missouri Valley Conference.

A.J. Green led the Panthers with 35 points. Nate Heise and Austin Phyfe each added 15. UNI has now won two of its last three games (2-4).

Coach Ben Jacobson tells us the post game locker room is a special place when something this special happens.

After nearly upsetting Arkansas earlier this week, ‘Jake and the Giant Killers’ had confidence that they had a very real opportunity to defeat the Bonnies. UNI is now 19-44 against top 25 teams.

The Panthers open the Valley conference season with a game at Bradley on Wednesday.

Our entire conversation with coach Jacobson can be heard at Valley Hoops Insider Podcasts.

During Saturday’s victory the Panthers made 15 of 31 three-point attempts and out rebounded the Bonnies 41 to 29. Tywhon Pickford led the way collecting nine caroms.

I haven't heard, nor do I know, how does this apply to the typical 'foreign' basketball player that is most often over 19?

Obviously, this is a sentimental and not a ‘spreadsheet’ notion, but would hate to see @MVCsports change the #ArchMadness format from the traditional ‘family reunion’ feel by cutting teams from the experience. #FatherHarry

Congrats to @ISURedbirdGolf. T.J. Barger sets a school record. Pietro Pontiggia records the Redbirds' second-ever top 20 finish at a regional. The team finishes tent in the region which is tied for the program's best regional finish! #FatherHarry
