The Gritty SIUE Cougars
Steal Unexpected Win over Lindenwood
(St. Louis, MO) – Just when we knew Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s basketball team was done for, the gritty SIUE Cougars knocked off first place Lindenwood. In short order the team lost starters Myles Thompson, Ring Malith and C.J. Hall and had to face the undefeated and highest scoring team in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Thompson is out for the year and Malith may be. Just hours before the game, head coach Brian Barone learned that C.J. Hall would be out for the Lindenwood game and perhaps longer. The Cougars mantra of ‘find a way’ was never more in focus than Tuesday in Edwardsville, Illinois.
SIUE (10-6, 3-2) prevailed 66-62 holding Lindenwood roughly twenty points below its season scoring average.
Barone coaxed season high scoring performances out of Darrion Baker (20 and nine rebounds), Kyle Thomas (13) and Tyler King (12). Point guard Jack Campion contributed seven points, five boards and seven assists.
The SIUE defense limited Lindenwood (10-6, 4-1) to a 19 percent shooting night from beyond the arc.
Barone was filled with pride over the efforts of his banged up team.
While Lindenwood has Thursday off, the wearied and battered Cougars prepare for a visit from the Little Rock Trojans. Lindenwood still leads the OVC with a 4-1 league mark, but UT Martin, Tennessee State, Southeast Missouri and Morehead State are all 3-1.
SIUE and Little Rock each have two losses.
