Stars of the OVC

Raegan McCowan & Everybody Else

(St. Louis, MO) – Raegan McCowan stands out among the stars of the OVC. The Ohio Valley Conference announced its weekly award winners and the Western Illinois guard claimed her tenth weekly ‘Freshman of the Week‘ award and will be the league’s ‘Freshman of the Year‘.

Several of this week’s award winners have added their names to this list often and are clearly stars of the OVC too.

Top Stars of the OVC

McCowan is this week’s ‘Co-Player of the Week‘. This is her third ‘Player’ award as she recorded two, double-doubles. During the Leathernecks’ two wins she racked up 40 points and twenty-one rebounds. WIU (15-6, 6-4) has won three straight games and are locked in a four-way tie for third place.

Sharing the weekly ‘Player‘ nod is UT Martin’s Norah Clark. The Skyhawks claimed two road wins and are part of that third-place log jam. Clark attained career highs in points (29) and rebounds (9) at SIUE and scored eleven points at Eastern Illinois.

UT Martin earned two road wins and junior guard Jordan Sears was dominant. He averaged 29.5 points, five rebounds and 5.5 assists in the Skyhawk wins. His career high 34 points at SIUE were a product of six three pointers and ten free throws. The ‘Player of the Week‘ was the OVC’s leading scorer (20.2 points per game) heading into Tuesday’s action. Sears has claimed the weekly honor twice.

Not So New Newcomers

Morehead State’s Riley Minix keeps racking up awards. The grad transfer averaged 20.5 points and eleven rebounds for the first place Eagles. His ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ award is his fifth. He’s been the ‘Player of the Week’ an additional four times. Minix is the league’s third leading scorer, second leading rebounder and top marksman from the free throw line.

Sanaa’ St. Andre has earned three of the last four women’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ awards and four overall. The Tennessee State senior scored 19 and then 18 points during the Tigers’ two wins. TSU is looking for its first road conference win at Lindenwood on Thursday.

Dominating Freshmen

Little Rock’s Jalen Crocker-Johnson has claimed two straight ‘Freshman of the Week‘ awards and six overall. Last week he averaged eleven points and nine rebounds as the Trojans split two games. Only five OVC rookies have earned a weekly notification. While Tennessee State’s Jaylen Jones has claimed four, Morehead State’s Eddie Ricks has picked up two. Lindenwood’s Colin Ruffin and Tennessee Tech’s Rylee Samons have the other two honors.

McCowan and Clark share the women’s ‘Freshman of the Week‘ honor. Clark’s weekly nod is her second freshman honor. McCowan’s award is her tenth ‘Freshman‘ notification and thirteenth overall. The two, first-year stars square off Saturday in Macomb, Illinois.
