Late Whistles, Home Court Advantage & Favorite Coaches
Part Two with Basketball Official Gerry Pollard
(St. Louis, MO) – During Part Two of our conversation with hall-of-fame basketball referee Gerry Pollard we discuss late whistles, the ‘home court advantage’ and his favorite coaches to officiate with. Pollard worked 21-straight NCAA Tournaments. Valley fans may remember him working Loyola’s Elite Eight game in 2018 and he has Final Four experience.
He debunks the ‘late whistles’ controversy and doesn’t believe in a home court advantage based on officials’ responses. Pollard is concerned by the physicality that he has seen return to the game during this year’s NCAA Tournament and believes there will be a rule change or two coming this offseason.
As an administrator of officials across several conferences, he’s concerned about the amount of travel the upper level officials are putting in and the amount of games they’re officiating.
During Part One of this conversation we looked into some of the controversial situations from earlier in the Big Dance. Pollard helped us understand more about what could or should have happened.
Enjoy the Final Four, give the Zebras a little grace and remember what Pollard said about late whistles.
