Big Time Performances
(St. Louis, MO) – Week one of the college basketball season saw some big-time performances by players from the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences. UT Martin shocked UNLV and Skyhawk players dominated the OVC weekly awards.
Players from three different teams gobbled up the MVC awards.
Players of the Week
Jaquan Johnson’s 33-point explosion against Central Michigan is the the highest scoring performance of the young season. The 5’11 sophomore scored 13 points during Bradley’s season opener and is the MVC’s ‘Player of the Week’.
UT Martin’s first award winner is ‘Player of the Week’ Andrija Bukumirovic. The 6’7 wing converted 88 percent of his shots scoring forty points during the Skyhawks’ two victories. His 23 points sparked UTM’s upset of UNLV and he recorded double-double against Kentucky Christian.
Week One Newcomers
Another prolific shooter was Indiana State’s Ian Scott. The NAIA transfer connected on 82 percent of his shots on the way to 37 points during the Sycamore’s first two games. This week’s MVC ‘Newcomer of the Week’ also grabbed 17 rebounds.
During UTM’s amazing first week, Dragos Lungu averaged twenty points and five boards. The University of San Diego transfer tied Bukumirovic with 23 points against UNLV and the OVC’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ finished with 17 against Kentucky Christian.
Top Rookies
Illinois State’s Ty’Reek Coleman struggled shooting the ball during the Redbirds’ opener and then exploded for 24 points against Cornell. This week’s MVC ‘Freshman of the Week’ is one of ten first year players nationally to score that many points.
Matas Deniusas is the third Skyhawk to claim an OVC weekly award. The 6’7 forward averaged eleven points and six rebounds during UTM’s first two games. This week’s ‘Freshman of the Week’ is not just UTM’s third award winner, but the third foreign-born winner. ‘Team FIBA’ is making its mark on the OVC.
