Rack One Up For The GLVC

DrurywinsSt. Louis, MO –  They are still celebrating at Drury University!  The basketball Panthers won the Division II National Championship and the Springfield community is still in a state of euphoria.

The basketball team isn’t the only Drury squad celebrating. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won national titles too.  A much larger celebration for the three teams is yet to come.

Drury finished the season with 23 straight wins and obviously a national title game victory over Metro State. The Panthers trailed by as much as 17 points in the title contest, but eked out a 74-73 championship game win.

Alex Hall (most outstanding player) and St. Louisian Brandon Lockhart were named to the all tournament team and led the Panthers in scoring and the huge come back drive in the championship.  Over 1,200 Drury fans attended the game and swelled the attendance figures to the largest since 1971, with a total of 7,753.

Hall finishes his career as one of the most decorated players in Drury history and Lockhart finishes 21st in scoring, first in steals and fourth in assists. Hall finishes with 2,200 points making him the third leading scorer in program history and the all-time leader in three point baskets.

Head Coach Steve Hesser was also named the Division II national coach of the year and the next game he coaches will be in next season’s exhibition opener against Division I super power Duke University.
