MVC/OVC Week Three Stars

All First Time Winners

(St. Louis, MO) – First time winners of weekly awards are making a difference in the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences. Five of the of the six week three stars are playing their first seasons with their teams and in these conferences.

Missouri Valley teams achieved an outstanding week of multi-team event success while Ohio Valley teams seemingly played overtime games with great regularity.

MVC Week Three Stars

Missouri State’s Matthew Lee took over the Paradise Jam. The Saint Peters transfer was named the MVP of the Paradise Jam and then scored 28 points during the Bears win over South Carolina State. Lee leads the Valley in assists (5.7 per game) and is this league’s ‘Player of the Week‘. The point guard is averaging 12.5 points per game and is making over 82% from the charity stripe. Lee missed all but two Missouri State games last season.

Evansville’s Ben Humrichous’ outstanding season continues. The NAIA transfer averaged 27.5 points per game this week and leads the Purple Aces in scoring (19.0 ppg), field goal percentage (.620) and in three-point shooting. This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ is converting .485 from deep and making 2.67 triples per game.

Cooper Schwieger’s play makes people forget he is a freshman. His game is so under control and efficient that Valparaiso has been able to depend on the 6’8 wing. Schwieger averaged 15 points and five rebounds during Valpo’s MTE action. The ‘Freshman of the Week‘ is part of an exciting youth movement that finds a significant number of under classmen in Roger Powell’s rotation.

OVC Week Three Stars

The leading scorer on the OVC’s highest scoring team is the league’s ‘Player of the Week’. Jordan Sears averaged 30.5 points last week and raised his season scoring average to 22.3 points-per-game. The 5’11 junior also grabbed 4.5 rebounds and handed out 4.5 assists. Sears is the reigning ‘Newcomer of the Year‘ and is a favorite to claim the league’s ‘Player of the Year‘ award.

Sears is the one player among these weekly award winners that actually played in either league last season. The UT Martin guard follows teammate Jacob Crews as the weekly award winner.

Little Rock’s Jamir Chaplin recorded two double-doubles and averaged twenty points and thirteen rebounds last week. The ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ was outstanding as the Trojans split two overtime games last week. Chaplin’s teammate DeAntony Gordon was the week one OVC ‘Player of the Week‘.

Tennessee State’s Jaylen Jones is the Tigers’ first weekly award winner. The 6’1 freshman sparked TSU to a 2-1 week while averaging 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists and is this week’s OVC ‘Freshman of the Week‘.

Women’s weekly award winners will be announced later.
