Matthew Graves is Healthy Again

His Journey Back from Heart Surgery

(St. Louis, MO) – Indiana State basketball coach Matthew Graves is healthy again! On October 20 of last year the university announced that he would undergo a triple bypass procedure and was ‘taking a leave of absence, effective immediately, due to a medical procedure ahead of the start of the 2025-26 season.

The surgery was a definite success and then the second-year head coach began the long road to recovery. From not being able to walk up steps to being able watch games from the top level of the Hulman Center, Graves worked patiently towards returning to the Sycamore sideline.

His first game back was a ‘heart-stopping’ overtime win over Belmont (pun intended) on December 29.

Here is our entire conversation covering surgery, the recovery process and discussing his team. Head to Valley Hoops Insider Podcasts for an audio-only version.

Indiana State is 8-9 and has won just one of its six league games. The Sycamores host Illinois State on Wednesday and travel to Murray State this weekend.

We’re truly glad that Matthew Graves is healthy again.

I haven't heard, nor do I know, how does this apply to the typical 'foreign' basketball player that is most often over 19?

Obviously, this is a sentimental and not a ‘spreadsheet’ notion, but would hate to see @MVCsports change the #ArchMadness format from the traditional ‘family reunion’ feel by cutting teams from the experience. #FatherHarry

Congrats to @ISURedbirdGolf. T.J. Barger sets a school record. Pietro Pontiggia records the Redbirds' second-ever top 20 finish at a regional. The team finishes tent in the region which is tied for the program's best regional finish! #FatherHarry
