MVC/OVC Week Eight Award Winners

(St. Louis, MO) – High scoring standouts made their mark in the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences this week. However, scoring a ton of points isn’t the only thing these weekly award winners accomplished. Their overall games sparked their individual teams to success.

Some of these high scoring standouts are receiving these awards in a routine fashion.

Players of the Week

Southern Illinois’ Xavier Johnson begins the week as the nation’s second leading scorer (24.6 ppg) after producing his fifth 30-point performance of the season. Johnson led the Salukis to their third straight win (ninth overall) and evened their league mark to 1-1. The Valley’s leading assist man (5.8 per game) added five helpers and three boards.

The Valley ‘Player of the Week’ award is Johnson’s second of the season.

Ohio Valley newcomers Jamir Chaplin and Riley Minix share this week’s ‘Player of the Week’ nod. Morehead State’s Minix claimed his third such honor by racking up 34 points in the Eagles’ only game. The 6’8 Minix grabbed eight rebounds and is now the OVC’s second leading scorer (18.3 ppg) and third leading rebounder (9.0 per game).

Little Rock’s Chaplin helped the Trojans to a split of their first two league road games by averaging 27 points and eight rebounds. This is Chaplin’s first ‘Player of the Week’ honor and he is the OVC’s fifth leading scorer (16.7) and seventh best rebounder (7.4)

Newcomer High Scoring Standouts

Illinois State’s Myles Foster was outstanding in defeat. The Monmouth college transfer scored 20 points and grabbed fifteen rebounds during the Redbirds defeat at Kentucky. Both figures were season highs for the Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’, who is now the MVC’s fifth leading rebounder (7.5 per game). Foster’s weekly honor is the first for any Redbird player this season.

Chaplin and Minix are both newcomers to the OVC and share the ‘Newcomer of the Week’ award. Minix has received the weekly award each of the three times he was the ‘Player of the Week’ and this is Chaplin’s second ‘Newcomer’ notification. Chaplin leads all OVC players with a .600 field goal percentage. Minix is second at .503.

Rookie Winners

Valparaiso’s Jahari Williamson produced Valpo’s highest scoring freshman performance in almost four years by racking up 24 points during the Beacons’ loss to Elon. He and rookie teammate Cooper Schwieger were Valpo’s high scoring standouts as each topped the 20-point mark. Williamson earned this week’s Valley ‘Freshman of the Week’ honor. Schwieger claimed that distinction during the season’s third week.

Little Rock’s Jaylen Crocker-Johnson is making a run at the ‘Freshman of the Year’ award. The 6’8 rookie is this week’s OVC ‘Freshman of the Week’ and he has now tied Tennessee State’s Jaylen Jones with three such honors. Crocker-Johnson averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds during the Trojans’ successful road trip.
